With a little fatherly advice and help from my digital camera and the internet (slow as it may be), I lit my pilot light for the first time tonight. I was very fearful of taking on this task (or any task involving gas and fire) but dad talked me through it and hopefully I'll have hot water in a few minutes.

It sounds like you've tackled more home improvements/repairs in the last couple of months than I have in a lifetime. Isn't being a single homeowner great? My favorite is trying to move the fridge out all by myself.
I've got mad skills as a single homeowner. My dad would have nothing less. At least my roommate is there to laugh at me. The fridge isn't so much a problem as the attic stairs.
