I spent the weekend in wedding land. An old friend, Katherine, got married on Saturday in a beautiful old Episcopal church. Katherine and I have one of those relationships in which we don't talk for months but can pick it up at any time (usually over a large plate of Thai food) without missing a beat. Friendships like that are rare... but much relished.
Saturday night, I went to a wedding shower for my friend Carrie. There were so many people there I had not seen in quite some time. It was refreshing. I realized their absence from my life leaves a much bigger void than I had ever acknowledged. I miss the times when they were more present. However, I am blessed by the people with whom God has filled the spaces.
Sunday,... another shower. Lingerie. The thought of buying someone else underwear has become less awkward as I have gotten older.
After the shower, I put myself to work in the yard. The grass needed a cut DESPERATELY and I knew I was going to have to find the strength to re-string the weed eater. We don't get along.. the weed eater and I. It is my arch nemesis. It is the one thing that keeps me from wanting to work in the yard more often. Yesterday, God must have decided to throw me a bone because I conquered the weed eater. I not only re-stringed the sucker with limited cursing, I also trimmed the entire yard (granted, it's not that big) with out having to re-string again. I felt like I had just won the World Series... the Kentucky Derby.... the Super Bowl... and the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes all in one swoop.
Despite my reunions and my prize winnings, the most beautiful part of the weekend is made evident in the picture above. Look closely. Those are tiny tomatoes. God has made the fruits of my labor evident. This garden has been like my baby. I've nurtured it, protected it, fed it and watched it grow. Now I am praying for a beautiful summer harvest.
